Common resident. Breeding males could be mistaken in noth-eastern regions for next species which has an entirely red crown. In summer males call a wheezy, spluttering 'zik-zik-zik......zayzayzayzayzayzay'. Occurs in flocks in association with reeds, rank grassland and cultivations; common in vleis. In summer males display by puffing out their plumage while perched or flying over their territory, usually several visible at a time. In winter form flocks and are nomadic
